What is Earth From Down Under

Earth from Down Under is a blog about our twice in a lifetime retirement visits to the Antipodes with stops in Hawai'i. To stay in touch with friends and family while on our trip, we will post updates as often as possible. (Click on the photos to enlarge them for the full effect.)

Wild World and Sydney Aquarium

The American body hunter spoke so highly of the Sydney Aquarium that we decided to go next day. I was sceptical when we arrived, it looked like a major tourist trap and it was costly $49 each!; all these sights are so costly, I don’t know how families afford to do anything. Frankly I was more interested in Wild World that featured all indigenous Australian wild life in natural settings. So if we were going to pay it, I opted for that. Upon arrival, we discovered there was a package price for both venues that looked like a good deal. Duncan asked about a senior’s rate, and we got the price down considerably. It only cost us $84 all in, whereas originally we thought it would be $98 for just one venue. Wild World was fantastic; we were sure author Bill Bryson had visited while researching his book In a Sunburned Country. There was every poisonous snake, spider, scorpion etc. However there were also reassuring signs saying things like only one person died last year from snakebite, the sun is more dangerous, skin cancer kills hundreds, things like that.

I just loved the koalas, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, wallabys. I knew the Australian animals would blow me away, and they did. I took some great movies of the koalas being weighed. Don’t you think? (Sorry it's sideways!)

The aquarium was excellent, the forensic scientist was correct, and I was glad she recommended it. It was amazing to see the giant turtles, sharks, stingrays and other creatures swimming above our heads; we really felt like divers without all the gear. We were lucky to arrive at feeding time when the real divers fed all these creatures by hand.
