What is Earth From Down Under

Earth from Down Under is a blog about our twice in a lifetime retirement visits to the Antipodes with stops in Hawai'i. To stay in touch with friends and family while on our trip, we will post updates as often as possible. (Click on the photos to enlarge them for the full effect.)

The Chocolate Fish

We decided to take advantage of a glorious morning to take what is described in our DK guidebook as The Marine Drive. We set off and 20 minutes from the city on a winding coastal seaside road with no shoulder just the sea on our left, arrived at The Chocolate Fish close to Scorching Bay. Aren’t those great names? A chocolate fish is actually a kiddy treat, sort of a fish-shaped raspberry marshmallow concoction coated in milk chocolate – like an Easter basket confection in North America. I bit into one at a Waitangi cafe but didn’t finish it, didn’t really want to swallow it, actually. Luckily the only chocolate fish we encountered at The Chocolate Fish were on their signs. We enjoyed “flat whites” in the sunshine and resisted the temptation of fruit muffins and scones. I couldn’t help lament the fact that no one in Toronto has had the business acumen to create such a unique charming cafe in our Beach(es) neighbourhood. Our lakeside cafes are non-descript or appalling, dominated by Pizza Pizza and other franchises. Have a look at these cleverly painted chairs and see if you don’t agree with me!
