What is Earth From Down Under

Earth from Down Under is a blog about our twice in a lifetime retirement visits to the Antipodes with stops in Hawai'i. To stay in touch with friends and family while on our trip, we will post updates as often as possible. (Click on the photos to enlarge them for the full effect.)

A Word About NZ as a Destination

We arrived in town in time to hit the laundromat next to the backpacker’s hostel, our first visit to one of these establishments as we’ve been able to depend upon the good will of friends or use the laundry facilities at our rented apartments. While I watched the laundry tumble in the dryers, Duncan tracked down Avalanche (!) B & B to check out the facilities. (I don’t think I would name my B & B Avalanche in this mountainous area it might scare off potential customers.)

He returned all smiles. Our new accommodation on the edge of town, suits us perfectly. It has everything except a washer/dryer, and the owner said we could have used hers. Because the Wanaka Show was just ending and the town was overrun by agricultural devotees, she suggested that we visit the local New World (a prima NZ supermarket chain) to buy our dinner. Those who were probably weary of the Wanaka Show were there at 6 p.m. on a Saturday night, young backpackers stalking dinner, locals trawling the aisles for culinary bargains and us. We are already familiar with the NW layout having shopped at branches in Wellington and Blenheim, so we stocked up on pre- roasted chicken, lots of fruits and vegetables and, of course, chocolate. Duncan had had the foresight to chill the rose left from the La Veranda lunch, and we savoured our repast at the picnic table right outside our sliding glass door at the edge of their suburban lawn and flower garden, with a distant view of the snow-covered Mt. Avalanche which we aspire to at least approach on a day long hike tomorrow.

Any of you desiring an almost hassle free holiday in an exceptionally beautiful environment, might seriously consider New Zealand. The only difficulty is getting here, as it is so far away from anywhere except Antarctica or Australia. However, once here, life is so easy. The people are honest, friendly, never rude or impatient and don’t expect tips! The roads though only two lanes in most places and exceedingly winding are well maintained. Friends and acquaintances warned us that New Zealand drivers could be aggressive and impatient. Have they ever driven in Italy, Spain or France, we wonder? Driving here is a picnic as long as you remember to stay to the left! Does New Zealand have a Chamber of Commerce? We could become ambassadors, persuading North Americans to get on the next plane. There are so few people living here, it’s not crowded with visitors, except at the Wanaka Show, so what are you waiting for? Do yourself a big favour, book that flight!
